PLANET ARGON DNS alias

As an alternative to hosts file hacking PLANET ARGON has the ability to let you use a subdomain of alias.planetargon.com to test your site before DNS is setup.

For example if your domain is “example.com” and your server is ion.planetargon.com then the URL for you to use to test a new site before DNS is setup will be.

http://example.com.ion.alias.planetargon.com

Ugly yes, but you can link people two it, and you can’t link people to something that edits their hosts file for them, or at least if you came up with a program to do it they will be wondering why all the browser alarms are going off about security risks.

This is still somewhat experimental, and not all of the servers have been configured to create this automatically for you when you add a domain via the control panel. The servers that have still cannot handle it if you have a dedicated IP address. If you would like to use this feature, and it isn’t magically working for you please contact support to get it setup.

Please note that there are 3 parts to this. DNS points the domain at your server. Apache points the domain to your private port, and nginx/pound/lighttpd points the domain at your app. Two of the three of these have to be configured by PLANET ARGON staff, but the third can be configured by the user.

Also do not add domains that you don’t have permission from the domain owner to host. For example adding google.com to your domain aliases will get your account suspended. This is a testing mechanism for sites that you intend to host at PLANET ARGON.

As an alternative, you can also Use an A-record to point to Planet Argon
